Space Mission in July,2020
There are 3 red planet mission launched in July 2020.
- Hope Mars Mission (UAE- July 19th, 2020)
- Tianwen- 1 (CHINA- July 23rd, 2020)
- Perseverance Rover (NASA- July 30th, 2020)
1. Hope Mars Mission
Spacecraft- Hope (Arabic- مسبار الأمل Al, Amal)
- The Hope Mars Mission is the first ever mission to Mars led by any West Asian, Arab or Muslim majority country.
- The Japanese rocket carrying the probe developed by the UAE lifted off from the Tanegashima Space Centre in southern Japan.
- Hope is scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021 (the year of 50th anniversary of UAE founding.)
- The spacecraft orbiter is a mission to Mars to study the Martian atmosphere & climate built by the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre, University of Colorado Boulder, Arizona State University and University of California.
- It costs about USD 200 million & will carry three instruments:
- an infrared spectrometer
- an ultraviolet spectrometer
- camera
- The Hope probe was launched from Japan & it take seven month to arrive at Mars.
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries(private company), the provider of the H-2A rocket.
- Hope is scheduled to reach Mars in February 2021 after travelling 495 million miles.
Expected Benefits:
- It will carry instruments to study the upper atmosphere & monitor climate change on Mars. It is scheduled to circle the red planet for at least two years.
- It will investigate how dust storms & other weather phenomena near the Martian surface speed or slow the loss of the planet's atmosphere into space.
2. Tianwen- 1
- China will launch its mars Mission - Tianwen 1.
- China's previous "Yinghuo- 1" Mars mission, which was supported by a Russian spacecraft, had failed after it did not leave the earth's orbit & disintegrated over the Pacific Ocean in 2012.
Key Points
The Tianwen-1 Mission:
- It will lift off on a Long March 5 rocket, from the Wenchag launch centre.
- It will carry 13 payloads (seven orbiters & six rovers) that will explore the planet.
- It is an all-in-one orbiter, lander & rover system.
- Orbiter: It is a spacecraft designed to orbit a celestial body (astronomical body) without landing on its surface.
- Lander: It is a strong, lightweight spacecraft structure, consisting of a base & three sides "petals" in the shape of a tetrahedron (pyramid-shaped). It is a protective "shell" that houses the rover & protects it along with the airbags, from the forces of impact.
- Rover: It is a planetary surface exploration device designed to move across the solid surface on a planet or other planetary mass celestial bodies.
- It will reach the Red Planet's orbit in February 2021. The rover will land on Mars in May.
Objectives:
- The mission will be the first to place a ground-penetrating radar on the Martian surface, which will be able to study local geology, as well as rock, ice, & dirt distribution.
- It will search the martian surface for water, investigate soil characteristics, and study the atmosphere.
3. Perseverance Rover
NASA's next generation Mars rover Perserverance Blasted of Florida's Cape Canaveral a top an Atlas 5 rocket.
US $2.4 billion mission to search for traces of potential past lifee on Earth's planetry neighbour.
About Perseverance
- The Perseverance rover wights less than 2,300 pounds & is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab.
- The rover's mission will be to search for signs of past microbial life. It will also collect samples of Martian rocks & dust, according to the release.
- The rover will also be tasked with studying the red planet's geology & climate.
Perseverance Rover

- Perseverance carries seven scientific instruments to study the Martian surface at Jezero crater.
- It carries 23 cameras in total, and two microphones. These rover is accompanied by the Helicopter Ingenuity, which will help Perseverance to scout for locations to study.
- Mars Helicopter Ingenuity is a solar- powered helicopter drone with a mass of 1.8 kilogram.
- It is expected to fly up to five times during its 30 days & will fly no more than 3 minutes per day.
- It will take approx. 7 months before rover lands on the red planet in February 2021.
